While doing world building for the short film I wrote, Make a Splash, I had to do some prop development. One of the characters in my film wrote a book, and he speaks about it in a podcast. In order to make this believable, I had to actually create a book cover. Since the film is an absurd comedy, satire is my friend. I went deep with the jokes as I created the book cover. It also helped the actors to have the book, of course, because it allows them to be more immersed in the scene. What we actually see on camera is enough to sell the idea that the book exists. The inner jackets are merely for fun and to convey to the actors that I’m serious enough about the prop to give them something to work with–which they did fantastically.
